Learn Spanish & Surf's Total Immersion Course offers this Spanish language and surfing lessons in South America's most beautiful surfing location, La Paloma, which has been described as the world's surfing capital because it has a south-facing peninsula with two large bays that offer perfect surfing conditions, year round. La Paloma can be translated as 'the pigeon or dove,' and was first named by the fishermen along the seashore who viewed the waves and rocks along the coastline as resembling a bird in flight. La Paloma is a peaceful town with a normal population of around 5,000 which swells to four times that size during their summer months of December to April, but the area still offers ideal conditions for swimming, fishing and surfing throughout the year.
This small fishing village is a popular resort destination located on the southern waters of the Atlantic Ocean and offers quaint shops and restaurants without a heavy influence of commercialism or expensive prices that you'll find in many of the coastal towns of Jose Ignacio, Punta del Este or La Barra. The many shops in the area offer crafted items made by artists in the area offering a variety of goods ranging from cotton and wool clothing, leather goods and home décor. Learn Spanish & Surf's Total Immersion Course allows you to learn Spanish in a truly unique immersion experience that offers time to explore, surf, and learn, as well as meet friends and explore the area with other students. Depending on wind direction and ocean swells, the area offers ideal surf conditions for beginners or expert surfers with waves on these South American beaches. We can guarantee that you will experience suitable learning conditions on most days with 2 to 3 foot waves and off shore winds. For the advanced surfer, there are excellent 5 to 7 foot point breaks and beach breaks, depending on swell and wind direction. The area offers beaches with stronger swells and surfing waves in the areas of Anaconda and La Aguada and another quieter beach, La Bahía, with shallow water and quiet waves for family gatherings and swimming along the shoreline.
There is much to see in the area including a cultural center, library and recreational activities. If you'd like to take day-trips to local areas, there are daily bus trips to Montevideo, Sernea Beach and La Pedrera. Or, you can climb the 150 steps to the top of the El Faro de Cabo Santa Mariá Lighthouse for a spectacular view. The El Faro del Cabo Santa María Lighthouse was built in 1874 and the soaring landmark became the cornerstone for what has become one of South America's most popular summer beach resorts. When the lighthouse was initially constructed, it collapsed in a violent storm and killed 17 French and Italian workers who are buried nearby. Outside the lighthouse is a solar clock using shadows cast by the lighthouse. If you enjoy nature and bird watching, Laguna del Rocha, is a nearby ecological reserve located 10km west of La Paloma. There, you'll find a wide-variety of local birds such as black-necked swans, storks, spoonbills and other waterfowl. Bring your camera to capture rare moments in this government protected ecological reserve. Keep your camera available for more photo opportunities for whale watching (best month for viewing in October). La Paloma is also a destination for other wildlife - on sea and land - for seals, dolphins, whales and birdlife.
You can travel to La Paloma by bus from Montevideo which takes between three and four hour of travel time and leaves approximately every two hours. Traveling from Buenos Aires, you can take a ferry to Colonia or Montevideo and continue to travel by bus. Our Learn Spanish & Surf's Total Immersion Course
